Try to go as early in your trip as possible, because sea conditions often lead to cancellations of viewing trips.

Just had another baby at the end of May so no holiday for us this year.

Although the sister in law has just been over for two weeks with her 5yo from israel and has now taken my 7 yo daughter back to israel with her for a few weeks before the monster in law brings my princess back and parks her fat arse on my sofa for a couple of months.

I agree with nurse, the birdlife is spectacular and I am more interested in them to be honest.

Got goldfinches, kingfishers, collared doves, red kites, hawks and loads of hedge birds too here in saffron walden.

Mammaries aren't though

Mammals are massively overrated.

Perfect for Nursey, it is famous for the temperature always ranging from 20 to 30 deg c.

Lovely island, great flora, almost no fauna. Just birds, no mammals.

Its a volcanic island (extinct) so has a big range of hills/mountains.

Having said all that its a bit boring and 11 days is probably too much.

The food is fucking brilliant though, especially if you like barbecued seafood.

Re: Madeira - anyone been?
Yes, and it's a beautiful island.

Half the runway is built on stilts, and landings (and take-offs) can be interesting. I know a former airline captain who fucked up his approach (actually, it was down to wind shear) and landed very heavily, thereby screwing up his back for some years afterwards. But rest assured, airlines only allow their most qualified captains to fly there and it's always a captain's landing. Enjoy!

Almost got there a few weeks ago, diverted to faro twice, lairy attempt at a landing.

I expect they have an autumn/winter.

I managed Malta with alacrity, so I'm pretty confident I could tackle Portugal.

Yeah but it's HOT, so it cancels out

I would like to go there if only for the many varieties of passionfruit.

I like passionfruit.

I flew there boxing day a few years ago. Bad storm that night, the pilot made about five attempts to land, then gave up. We spent the night on another island ten minutes away.

Food and drink seemed very reasonable, and the locals were friendly. Very hilly place. And there's a nice statue of Ronaldo down by the harbour, as he was born there.

Runway built on stilts in the ocean on top of all the rubble from the tunnels thorough the mountains - take off is fun too aiming at the ocean.
Can't remember too much about this place apart from no beaches and loads of cable cars.

Re: Madeira - anyone been?
Went once nearly 20 years ago at a time they were extending the runway and as a result building work going on everywhere to accommodate expected influx. Apart from the obvious wine and cake and Reid's - can't say I have much to say ... I think it can get windy but it is in the Atlantic !

Had my most 'interesting' landing ever on Madeira.

Spent the whole holiday buying new underpants.
